One, please.

Second in a very-sporadic series of pieces of furniture I’d like to own is the Bösendorfer grand piano custom-designed by German carmaker Audi. Growing up, the piano was of sorts the center of our household; my mother would play it daily*. It’s non-traditional, sure, but it’ll look great in the house KWK Promes are going to design for me.

*I got into dance primarily because I grew up in dance studios — she was an accompanist and played for nearly every class I took until I was sixteen.

Fall for the beach.

Montrose Harbor and Beach.

Montrose Harbor and Beach.

It may already be closed by the time you read this — she’s pretty close to finding her fifteen — but it’s worth mentioning that dance filmmaker Nadia Oussenko is calling upon the performance community to be a part of her CDF-sponsored bit of cinema, On Falling…

Tomorrow, July 9, on “a hill near Montrose Beach” (I believe there’s only one) from 3:30-7:30pm, Oussenko will be asking those participating to “roll down a hill, learn and perform simple choreography, and improvise.” The shoot includes snacks and water for the talent, but this ain’t a party you can just crash: email Rachel Damon at tech (dot) damon (at) gmail (dot) com to inquire about openings and get yourself some further details. The weather should be damn near perfect — if I weren’t otherwise engaged I’d be there in a heartbeat, so go have some fun for me and tell Nadia I said hello.

Performance-venue-as-experience-on-a-stick

Rendering of the foyer of Visiondivision and Markus Wagner's Tornado Tower.

Rendering of the foyer of Visiondivision and Markus Wagner's Tornado Tower.

Visiondivision and Svensk Standard‘s Markus Wagner are either brilliant or have lost their damn minds: Proposing a new performing arts complex for the opera in Taipei, the Swedish firm and friends dreamt up the Tornado Tower, a flat-roofed half-egg on a giant stem that whisks theatergoers up in “non-toxic and non-flammable,” semi-reflective acrylic balls and is festooned with wind-catching scales that generate power for the building and its surroundings.

Audition Saturday

Actor/dancers available for and interested in CDF Lab Artist Jonathan Meyer‘s new project, premiering September 10-13 and 16-19, should get in touch with Meyer (at) khecari (dot) org or call (312) 646-9548 for ensemble roles. Held this Saturday, July 11 from 3:30-7:30pm at Yoga Now’s Edgewater location,

Khecari is seeking 8-12 performers who will form a movement/vocal ensemble as part of The Waking Room, an evening-length work for three movement soloists and 8-channel live and recorded sound score.

Auditioners should have comfort and facility with their body and movement, vocalizing, and stage presence and character development. Auditioners need not have formal training in dance, singing, or acting. Selected ensemble members should be mature and comfortable using their bodies and voices, take direction well and demonstrate an openness to trying new ideas. For the final show, the ensemble will create a distinct presence in the audience, will migrate between audience space, musicians’ space, and the dance stage, and will perform sound and movement events.

Rehearsals will be on Saturdays from 3:30 to 6:30pm. You must be available for all rehearsals to be considered for this role. We expect to provide a small honorarium to selected performers.

Weekly rehearsals with choreographer Jonathan Meyer and composer Christopher Preissing will begin the week following the audition and continue through tech week. Tech/Performance Schedule includes the week of September 7 through September 20, 2009. Detailed Tech Schedule will be available at the audition.

The Waking Room arises from the gleaming gaps in the dark veil of consciousness which blankets pre-cognition. Using a process of somatic meditation, Khecari’s Jonathan Meyer has developed a movement palette generated by minute observation of and response to the process of perception. Lifting up the accidents and false starts otherwise lost to cognizance, this is an investigation of the physiological life and expression of the subconscious channels of sensory interpretation. Collaborator Christopher Preissing is using a parallel process of deconstructing recognized vocal and found sounds to create sonic cells; these are reconfigured and layered with live flute and vocal sounds in a multi-speaker score.

DC spreads out.

Speaking of festivals, word is out that Dance Chicago 2009 will be a multi-venue affair. Its marriage with the Athenaeum has been a long and monogamous one — it’ll be interesting to see how nearly two months of programs settle among five city and suburban theaters.

It’s summer. We have parks. No-brainer.

IndianBoundaryPark
Millennium, Hamlin and occasionally Pulaski have been sharing the heavy lifting for awhile now, but Katie McCann has been quietly busting her ass for years getting dance into more of our city’s parks. This summer her dream finally gets its first days in the sun: Dance in the Parks has four free concerts confirmed so far; the first is at Indian Boundary August 20. Woo-hoo!
