David Roussève/REALITY

Saudade, the evening-length work David Roussève and his ensemble REALITY are currently touring and which opened here last night at the Dance Center of Columbia College, hits some high highs in its 100 minutes.  The lows are mostly the result in one way or another of an ambition to do too much in one evening (showing even half of what I saw would have been impressive) but never fall so sourly as to compromise the effect of its best moments.

The execution of this work is commendable.  Roussève and Assistant Director [and cast member (and creator of a short film I was in)] Marianne Kim have a strict eye for detail.  Some of the tonal shifts and transitions are hugely ambitious and it’s to their credit, and the fine ensemble’s, that they’re almost all pulled off with confidence.  It’s no secret I’m something of a finish fetishist, and I appreciated during each minute the care and deliberation that went into a thousand tiny decisions.  One of the biggest dividends it pays is to the show’s length:  Long, yes, and with no intermission, it moves forward so carefully and meditatively that there’s little opening to drop out as a viewer. Transfixing may be the word. Read More…

Whatchootalkinabout, Sears?

Gah! First this, and now this. Maybe next they’ll give it vinyl siding and a Mansard roof.

Not surprisingly, the Trib’s poll says 95% will still refer to it as the Sears.

Misha’s way.

I’ve seen Mikhail Baryshnikov in person twice: My dad took me to see him with White Oak Dance Project around 1994–he performed Twyla Tharp’s Pergolesi–and, about three years later, he stood just inside a studio at the School of American Ballet where I was taking Stanley Williams‘ men’s class and took photographs. Turns out he’s still at it: The Globe & Mail’s Simona Rabinovitch has a profile up on Misha’s new book of images, Merce My Way. Want.

OMAptimus Prime.

As the primary topics I cover here at trailerpilot are movement and architecture, it’s only perfect that I’ve come across one of a scant few things that could truly combine the two.

Visionary architect/personal hero/underrated comedian Rem Koolhaas has a long-standing relationship with Milan fashion house Prada, having designed multiple stores for the brand as well as being involved in ongoing projects with its for-arts-sake design wing Fondazione Prada. The latter has allowed his firm, OMA, to realize a gek-maar-briljant concept: A giant truncated tetrahedron that can be adjusted by crane to sit on any of its four faces; choosing a face both determines the pavilion’s shape and the sorts of activities to which it’s suited.

Rather than summarize and condense the volumes of blog chatter this structure has generated, I’ll just point you to a few of the more comprehensive posts about it–dig in.

Goofiness after the jump.

Scuttlebutt.

London.

London.

It’s shaping up to be a spring of shakeups.  I don’t know if I’m supposed to embargo this or not, but it doesn’t seem like anyone’s trying to keep too tight a lid on it:  CJ Mitchell is leaving the venerable, indispensable Link’s Hall for Jolly Olde England a little later this year.  His innumerable contributions to dance and performance in this city have not gone unnoticed; CJ, you will be missed.

One more picture of London, just ’cause it’s a beaut:

More London.

More London.

Speaking of flavor…

Both sides of Joel Hall’s Edgewater dance empire–his company and studio–recently moved up the street.  They’ve got so much lined up for the housewarming party, though, that they’re having to throw it off-site.  Friday April 3 (at 7:30) and Saturday April 4 (at 8), JHDC is performing and will host nine other groups at the Athenaeum for a benefit concert for the company and its new digs.  The lineup

is no joke (special note to all you JRJP fans:  Billy Siegenfeld & Co. are performing in Friday’s show only).  Tickets–it’s a benefit, remember–are $25 for adults and $15 for seniors and students which, for the record, is less than you would pay under any other circumstances to see all these companies in a single evening.  If you really want to grease your path to heaven, $100 “Gold Circle” tix are available for Friday, which include admission to a private pre-show soirée.  They’re available through the JHDC or Athenaeum box offices, as well as Ticketmaster.  It’s a veritable buffet of fierceness, kids, and I dare say you haven’t danced in Chicago if you haven’t pounded the marley at the JHDC at least once, so go show ’em some love.
