I Love-Love Fridays.

Volley 2 by Jeffrey Kalmikoff

Volley 2 by Jeffrey Kalmikoff

Partway into its second season I got into Coudal PartnersLayer Tennis on Friday afternoons [incidentally, their Fresh Signals link feed (amazing) deserves credit for the title of the previous post].  I don’t get to share in the thrill of knowing what kind of Adobe chops it takes to generate each volley, but I suppose that just frees me up to judge each on artistic merit alone.  Anyway, LT is back as of yesterday, and the season’s first match–between Jeffrey Kalmikoff and Brendan Dawes–has me hooked all over again.

(Dawes blogged his experience here)

Tangent.

Whilst researching jie-wu for a future post here I ran across a video from Brent Street Dance Academy in Sydney

and all I could think about were the mean girls from Muriel’s Wedding

The Towering Inferno

For those interested in intellectually unpacking the recent destruction by fire of Beijing’s nearly-completed Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Bert de Muynck has written an interesting analysis that’s getting around.

Nice buns and realness.

Generally good things have been said about Bertrand Normand’s documentary Ballerina–this weekend is your chance to decide for yourself.  Featuring two of the Kirov’s rising marquee names, Svetlana Zakharova and Alina Somova, and older (older, not old) stars Diana Vishneva and Ulyana Lopatkina, it goes behind-the-scenes The Children of Theatre Street-style to show the life cycle of the prima, from audition filly to wizened, evil has-been (kidding).  While Somova’s and (to a lesser extent) Zakharova’s showoffy freakishness leaves me chilly, the other two (as well as the intriguing Evgenia Obraztsova) do honor the title.  Whether you’re a closet bunhead or out and proud, this should scratch the itch.  Maybe I’ll see you there.

The screening schedule for Ballerina at the Gene Siskel Film Center is:

February 13-19
Friday and Monday-Thursday at 6:00 pm and 7:45 pm;
Sat. at 3:00 pm, 4:45 pm, 6:30 pm, and 8:15 pm;
Sun. at 3:00 pm and 4:45 pm

What, ballerinas aren’t real enough for you?  Well, Danièle Wilmouth will be at the Siskel too, on Thursday, February 19 at 6:00 pm–she’ll be emceeing her mini-fest The Dance Camera:  Locked & Loaded.  She’s chosen short dance cinema from between 1973 and 2006 that demonstrates its potential as a politico-activist genre.  Don’t miss it.

Thoughts of pretty u and me, erotic city come alive.

Endorsements are pouring in for The Elysian Ball, a ginormous party coming this Thursday to the nine thousand square feet of Xchange West. Rather than try to distill the list of artists involved–which reads like a decade of Girlesque Burlesques–I’ll just copy below and let you sift through it for friends, bell-ringers, and people you’ve always wanted to see and never have. The $30 (presale-only) tickets are reasonable enough to make all the action seem like a steal. Details and a treasure after the jump.

Batsheva Dance Company

making it

ignore all possible concepts and possibilities —
ignore Beethoven, the spider, the damnation of Faust —
just make it, babe, make it:
a house a car a belly full of beans
pay your taxes
fuck
and if you can’t fuck
copulate.
make money but don’t work too
hard — make somebody else pay to
make it — and
don’t smoke too much but drink enough to
relax, and
stay off the streets
wipe your ass real good
use a lot of toilet paper
it’s bad manners to let people know you shit or
could smell like it
if you weren’t
careful.

Japan Dance Black Shadow Pompadour Biker Gang Danceoff Now

My better half, wise as he is to breaking Scandanavian pop music news, directed me to the världspremiär video and single from Stockholm rockers Peter Bjorn and John.  I’m as tired of “Young Folks” as anyone else is, but after this and their last most recent single I see no need to stop loving this band.  That, and we saw Peter Morén perform at Schubas last year and he was fantastically talented, not to mention so cute you want to smother him with a pillow and hide the body.

It involves dancing bosozoku and soup, people! Love it.
