To know me is to know my undying love for the sadly-retired cabaret assassins known as Kiki Durane (Justin Bond) and Herb (Kenny Mellman). Bond, who I saw perform sans Mellman for the first time in New York last summer, has just given an interview to The Advocate on the occasion of the release of his new solo EP, Pink Slip. Swoon.
Gimme a pink slip.

Quick. Dirty. Awesome.

Performance workshop Quick and Dirty, the brainchild of Mad Shak‘s Molly Shanahan, gives advanced movement artists the unique opportunity to convene and create a piece; next month brings another installment of the series to Chicago’s dance community. In her words,
Shanahan directs and choreographs an original work, created through compositional modalities that emphasize the participant’s unique voice, expose Shanahan’s current movement research and core values, and engage questions of presence, ensemble communication and establishing viable creative containers for appropriate risk and individual development into new territory with an emphasis on rigor, detail and intuitive response.
Join Molly Shanahan and 8-10 advanced movers for one week of intensive creation, culminating in an informal public presentation.
As a former member of Mad Shak I can testify that working with Shanahan is about staying focused and prepared to jettison irrelevant or outdated methods and ideas, and that bit about “ensemble communication” is no joke. In just a few days you will emerge with phenomenal reattachments to the purpose of your dance studies and specificity of your goals — this workshop is highly recommended.
Free up August 16–22 to meet at Berger Park Cultural Center on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday & Thursday from 10:00am-2:30pm; Friday from 3:00-6:00pm; and Saturday noon-5:00pm (which day includes the public showing of the work at 4:00pm).
The fee is $300.00 — payment plans are available. Register and receive answers to any questions via email to kristina (dot) fluty (at) madshak (dot) com.

Quicksilver Occasion Pieces
At the end of May I attended Quicksilver Occasion Pieces at Silverspace: Vocalist Carol Genetti, dancer Asimina Chremos and bassist Thomas Helton in various combinations and collaborative improvisation. Birds of a feather, the three each have a tremendous command of technique combined with a profoundly open investigative spirit. Genetti flew through an enormous range of sounds and textures, capable both of intricate runs of staccato grunts and pops like the fatigued labors of a rusted machine and stretches of sustained, honeyed tones; she and Chremos chased one another in mutual inspiration, each able to create instantly an unexpected but fitting complement to the other’s action. Helton performed a solo piece that laid haunted knocks and rubs of his bass’ body on top of the deep, rumbling ostinato of a midnight freight train, and the three concluded with a joint performance that found Chremos casting the net of her movement research around everyone: At one point, she and Genetti crawled on hands and knees together, pulling the realms of movement and sound — their joints knocking the wooden floor — into a single, undifferentiated expressive space. It was an evening as powerful as it was intimate.
Did you miss it? Well, Quicksilver is back August 8 for a second installment: Chremos and Genetti return — as a duo they’re called Echo Den — and Philadelphia dancer Nicole Bindler and percussionist Michael Zerang complete the bill. At 8:00pm in Silverspace’s new annex Outer Space (next door in the same building, 1474 North Milwaukee Avenue); a mere seven dollars is suggested for admission. RSVP via email to silverspacedance (at) gmail (dot) com.

Jazz Dance World Festival 2009

Brisa Escobedo and Rolando Ramirez of Cuerpo Etéreo Danza Contemporánea in Llora . . . para que se te Lave el Alma.
Jazz Dance World Congress opened the performance series of its sixteenth occurrence with a new documentary by Pedro Brenner that pays tribute to the program’s founder, Gus Giordano. Reverence for the choreographer understandably permeates the festival’s atmosphere — the company he founded hosts the series and is the only one to appear on all four bills — but the singular and oft-imitated style he coined has already given way to a plurality of forms that belies the title of the occasion. Last night, seven companies from around the world raised the question of where exactly “jazz dance” is and how long it might identifiably be around. Good to hear.
Next stop, dreamland.
Ncounter Aissawa in the woods.
Ncounter is back with the ideal summer get-together: This Sunday at 3:00pm, put on something you can move in and head out to the LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve for some outdoor dancing, potluck chow and great company. To boot, Ncounter has invited locally-based Moroccan band Aissawa to provide irresistible rhythms. Sounds like a lovely afternoon to me.

Larry Long in critical condition.
I don’t know the details but it appears legendary teacher and longtime pillar of the Chicago dance community Larry Long has been in some kind of accident. Just in via Claire Bataille on Facebook:
Larry Long is in critical but stable condition at the Trauma Center ICU at Cook County Hospital. One broken leg, 3 broken ribs, some broken bones in his face, they are monitoring for internal bleeding (I think) but feel optimistic he will pull through. Of course he will. He’s Mr. Long. I’ll update if I hear anything and any of you out there please do the same so we can keep our community in the loop.
Will try to post more details as they come through. Meantime, trailerpilot wishes Mr. Long a swift and full recovery.
