Generally good things have been said about Bertrand Normand’s documentary Ballerina–this weekend is your chance to decide for yourself. Featuring two of the Kirov’s rising marquee names, Svetlana Zakharova and Alina Somova, and older (older, not old) stars Diana Vishneva and Ulyana Lopatkina, it goes behind-the-scenes The Children of Theatre Street-style to show the life cycle of the prima, from audition filly to wizened, evil has-been (kidding). While Somova’s and (to a lesser extent) Zakharova’s showoffy freakishness leaves me chilly, the other two (as well as the intriguing Evgenia Obraztsova) do honor the title. Whether you’re a closet bunhead or out and proud, this should scratch the itch. Maybe I’ll see you there.
The screening schedule for Ballerina at the Gene Siskel Film Center is:
You’re making me wish I lived in Chicago! These events look great.
